Sweden

Northern Europe

Vast archipelagos of rock and pine, above all around Stockholm and on the west coast near Gothenburg, with thousands of islands to explore.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change and vary by harbour, so confirm check-in, documents and anchoring with the official local source shortly before you go.

Best season

Mid June to mid August is the warm, light-filled peak; the archipelagos are quieter in early and late season.

Prevailing winds

Predominantly southwesterly and usually moderate in summer, with calm spells common in the sheltered archipelagos.

Hazards

Rock- and skerry-strewn waters demanding careful chart work, sudden squalls, and short steep seas on open stretches such as the crossing to Gotland.

Check-in & clearance

Sweden is EU and Schengen, so EU flagged yachts need no routine clearance. The cruising is famously free and uncrowded outside the peak summer weeks.

Required documents

Registration, insurance, radio and competence certificates, and passports. Detailed archipelago charts are essential because of the rock strewn waters.

Anchoring rules

Sweden's right of public access (allemansratten) allows anchoring and going ashore widely, the classic method being bow to a smooth rock with a stern anchor and lines ashore. Respect private jetties, bird sanctuaries and seasonal landing bans on some islands.

Nice places

The Stockholm archipelago around Sandhamn and Moja, the west coast islands near Marstrand, and the open water island of Gotland are the cruising jewels.
