Spain (mainland)

Western Mediterranean

The Spanish mainland coast, from the Costa Brava down to Andalusia and round to the Atlantic, with well equipped marinas and a long cruising season.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change and vary by harbour, so confirm check-in, documents and anchoring with the official local source shortly before you go.

Best season

May to October, with June and September the sweet spot for warm weather and lighter crowds. July and August are hot and busy.

Prevailing winds

Mostly light to moderate sea breezes in summer, but the cold, gusty Tramontana and Mistral can sweep the northern Costa Brava, and an easterly Levante brings weather and swell.

Hazards

Sudden Tramontana and Mistral gusts in the north, sea breezes that build quickly in the afternoon, strict Posidonia anchoring enforcement, and dense shipping near Barcelona and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Check-in & clearance

Spain is in the EU and the Schengen area. EU flagged yachts with EU resident crew move freely with no routine clearance. Non-EU flagged vessels or non-EU crew should expect to report on first arrival from outside Schengen and may be visited by the Guardia Civil; keep papers ready. Non-EU crew are subject to the 90 days in any 180 Schengen limit.

Required documents

Carry the vessel registration, evidence of VAT status or temporary admission for non-EU boats, third party insurance, the radio licence and operator certificate, passports or ID cards, and an ICC or national certificate of competence. A crew list helps at any inspection.

Anchoring rules

Anchoring over Posidonia seagrass is restricted and actively enforced with fines, especially in the Balearics and along protected stretches; anchor on sand and read the local marine reserve rules. Holding tanks are expected in many bays and discharge of untreated waste close inshore is prohibited.

Nice places

The Costa Brava coves north of Barcelona, the Cabo de Gata reserve in Almeria, and the run towards Gibraltar and the Strait all reward a relaxed schedule.
