SAILING ATELIER

Portugal

Atlantic Europe

An Atlantic coast of long passages and a handful of good harbours, plus the offshore Azores and Madeira as ocean stepping stones.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change and vary by harbour, so confirm check-in, documents and anchoring with the official local source shortly before you go.

Best season

May to September on the mainland; the Azores are busiest during the May to July crossing season.

Prevailing winds

The Portuguese trades, a steady northerly known as the Nortada, dominate the summer and can blow F5 to F7 down the coast, building strong afternoon winds and swell.

Hazards

Persistent northerly wind and Atlantic swell that make the coast a downwind run with few all-weather harbours, plus fog and strong gusts off the headlands.

Check-in & clearance

Portugal is EU and Schengen. EU flagged yachts cruise without routine clearance, but it is normal to report to the marina office and the maritime police (Policia Maritima) on first arrival, and arriving from outside Schengen you should clear immigration. The Azores and Madeira are common Atlantic crossing landfalls with their own arrival reporting.

Required documents

Registration, insurance, radio and competence certificates, VAT or temporary admission proof, and passports. Some marinas ask for a crew list. The Atlantic swell makes a working engine and ground tackle important.

Anchoring rules

Sheltered anchorages are limited on the exposed mainland coast, so passages are often marina to marina. Where you can anchor, watch the Atlantic swell and wind shifts. In the islands, use designated anchorages and moorings.

Nice places

The Rio Guadiana on the Spanish border, the lagoon at Ria Formosa in the Algarve, and the volcanic harbours of the Azores around Horta are memorable.
