Malta
Western Mediterranean
A compact, English speaking EU island nation in the central Mediterranean, a useful crossroads between Sicily, Tunisia and the east.
General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change and vary by harbour, so confirm check-in, documents and anchoring with the official local source shortly before you go.

Best season
April to November; the season is long but high summer is hot and harbours are full.
Prevailing winds
Predominantly northwesterly (the Majjistral) in summer; the Gregale, a strong northeasterly, can make the harbours uncomfortable and is most common in winter.
Hazards
Limited all-round shelter, swell entering harbours in strong winds, very busy anchorages at Comino, and heavy commercial traffic around Valletta.
Check-in & clearance
Malta is EU and Schengen. Arriving from another Schengen country is straightforward for EU flagged boats. Arriving from outside Schengen, fly the Q flag and report to Transport Malta and customs; clear at an approved port such as Msida, Mgarr (Gozo) or Grand Harbour.
Required documents
Registration, insurance, radio and competence certificates, VAT or temporary admission proof, and passports. Marina berths are limited, so book ahead.
Anchoring rules
Anchoring is restricted in busy harbours and over seagrass; use designated areas and avoid Posidonia. Holding tank use is expected in popular bays.
Nice places
Comino's Blue Lagoon (very busy in season), the cliffs of Gozo, and a night in the historic Grand Harbour at Valletta are the standouts.
