Italy
Western Mediterranean
A long and varied coast plus Sardinia, Sicily and the Aeolian islands, from the Ligurian Riviera to the heel of the boot.

Best season
May to October, with June and September the most comfortable. August is peak Italian holiday season and very busy.
Prevailing winds
Variable; afternoon sea breezes dominate in settled weather, with the Mistral reaching western Sardinia and a hot southerly Scirocco bringing haze.
Hazards
Strong winds funnelling through the Strait of Bonifacio and the Strait of Messina with its tidal races, active volcanoes in the Aeolians, and many anchoring limits in marine parks.
Check-in & clearance
Italy is EU and Schengen, so EU flagged yachts need no routine clearance. The annual navigation tax was abolished. Non-EU flagged boats should hold temporary admission paperwork; the Guardia di Finanza and Capitaneria patrol actively.
Required documents
Carry registration, insurance, radio and competence certificates, VAT or temporary admission proof for non-EU boats, and passports. In some marine parks you must register or pay an access fee on arrival.
Anchoring rules
Many areas are marine protected areas (La Maddalena in Sardinia, the Aeolian and Egadi islands, Portofino) with zoning that limits or bans anchoring and may charge for moorings. Seagrass protection applies; anchor on sand and follow park buoyage.
Nice places
The Maddalena archipelago off northern Sardinia, the Amalfi and Cilento coast, and the volcanic Aeolian islands north of Sicily are unforgettable.
