France (Mediterranean)

Western Mediterranean

The French Riviera and the coast west to the Camargue, plus Corsica, with glamorous ports and dramatic anchorages.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change and vary by harbour, so confirm check-in, documents and anchoring with the official local source shortly before you go.

Last reviewed 18 Jun 2026.

Best season

May to September; the shoulder months avoid the August crush on the Riviera.

Prevailing winds

The Mistral, a strong, cold, dry northwesterly, is the dominant feature and can blow hard for days, especially west of Toulon. Otherwise light sea breezes prevail.

Hazards

The Mistral can rise quickly and build a steep sea, Posidonia anchoring bans with marked zones around the national parks, and very busy waters off the Riviera in summer.

Check-in & clearance

France is EU and Schengen; EU flagged yachts cruise without routine clearance. Non-EU crew face the Schengen 90 in 180 limit. The customs service (Douanes) can board at any time, so keep documents accessible.

Required documents

Vessel registration, VAT or temporary admission evidence, insurance, radio licence, a competence certificate, and passports. A francisation or equivalent is needed only for French registered boats.

Anchoring rules

Recent French rules ban anchoring on Posidonia seagrass along much of the coast, with marked zones around the Port-Cros and Porquerolles national park and the Calanques near Marseille. Large yachts face specific limits; check the prefecture maritime notices and use designated zones.

Nice places

The Iles d'Hyeres, the Calanques between Marseille and Cassis, and the sheltered Corsican gulfs around Girolata and Bonifacio are classics.
