Croatia

Adriatic & Eastern Mediterranean

A long island studded Adriatic coast with thousands of anchorages, now inside both the EU and Schengen.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change and vary by harbour, so confirm check-in, documents and anchoring with the official local source shortly before you go.

Last reviewed 18 Jun 2026.

Best season

May to October; July and August are hot, busy and the most expensive, while June and September are excellent.

Prevailing winds

The Maestral sea breeze from the northwest builds most afternoons. The Bora, a fierce, cold, gusty northeasterly, can arrive suddenly, and the Jugo brings prolonged southerly winds, rain and swell.

Hazards

Violent Bora gusts off the mountains that can far exceed the forecast, crowded anchorages, and many compulsory mooring fields and national park fees.

Check-in & clearance

Croatia is EU and, since 2023, in the Schengen area and the euro. EU flagged yachts arriving from another Schengen country have lighter formalities, but a foreign flagged yacht still buys a vignette (sailing permit) and registers the crew list at a port of entry such as Pula, Zadar, Split or Dubrovnik before cruising. Carry the vignette and crew list at all times.

Required documents

Vessel registration, the Croatian vignette and crew list, insurance, radio and competence certificates, VAT or temporary admission proof, and passports. Changing crew must be reported. Skippers need a recognised certificate and a VHF licence.

Anchoring rules

Anchoring is widely possible but national parks (Kornati, Mljet, Brijuni) and nature parks (Lastovo, Telascica) charge entry fees and restrict anchoring to protect the seabed; organised mooring fields are common and often compulsory. A harbourmaster's tax applies. Holding tanks should be used in bays.

Nice places

The Kornati archipelago, the Pakleni islands off Hvar, and the Elaphiti islands near Dubrovnik are among the finest cruising in the Mediterranean.
